To Ricky From: Dixie

When I got Ricky for my service. I didn't know what to do, I got amazing ideas from my sister but blew them off just kidding. I wanted to go with a out going theater aspect according to Ricky personality. So in that case I also wanted to spread the Christmas cheer all around even more. So the day before the last day of school before winter break I made 126 cookies. When I went to school the next day I went into the performing arts hall and passed cookies out in bags saying merry Christmas on them. I went into the theater  room with a vast amount of kids hanging out and passed out 30 just there.
So during the whole day I then passed them out to people sitting alone at lunch, any body alone in the halls and then there was a smile on there face. I also gave them to teachers. Doing so throughout the school day caused attention so people would go looking for the girl with the huge Christmas bag with cookies. It was fun and many people asked why I would do it and I of course said for the coolest, most amazing cousin ever Ricky, and that I was doing service in his name
.Love you Ricky!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

For Jackson from Spencer

One of the many things I admire about my close cousin and friend Jackson is he is always willing to help out and invite others to join in on the fun things that would be going on. I have always noticed this amazing trait in Jackson and also noticed I sort of have a problem with that. So this year I decided my project would be to try to enhance these qualities in myself to share with others.  I will be honest most of the year I didn't even know who I had for this project and then I didn't really have a clue what I would do but once the idea came I liked the thought and started to search for opportunities.  There hasn't been any major things I have done or any cool stories to tell about service to others, but people have said they truly appreciated my help and without it their labor would have taken much longer and been much harder.  Most of this service was helping out with yard work I noticed elderly people in my ward needed help with.  In autumn I notice a man was raking his leaves and I invited two friends and we went over to help him; he graciously accepted and we got to work for a good hour and a half (He had a big backyard).  Apparently the next week he bore his testimony in high priests about the goodness in the ward and made us an example.  Another example is the other week my next door neighbor was shoveling her walkway by her self and I offered to help.  Every time we have had heavy snow in Lehi since I have helped her with her walkway and sidewalks. Anyways I have also tried to invite younger cousins who want to do stuff with us to come with us and also just friends at school. I can't say if I have truly helped someone out but I know that Jackson has on his younger cousins.

MERRY CHRISTMAS LAURA!!!

Merry Christmas Everyone!
I had a great opportunity to serve in behalf of Laura. Now still being fairly new to the family I decided I need to learn and talk to the some of the family members to learn about her. From what everyone told me, she is a fantastic person, what stood out to me is that when there is a need she will observe the situation and act to help. Therefore, for my service I wanted to build an A.R.K. (Acts of Random Kindness) This was an amazing experience for me and is something I would like to continue doing. I would like to share just a few experiences that I had with this service.
Grandma and Grandpa Schow
This experience started out wanting to clean my grandparents house that they have lived in for 52 years. As they have grown older they can only keep it tidy but not deep clean it. My parents, some siblings, Lauren and I  decided to deep clean the house while they were working at the temple. As we were cleaning we found out that they did not get very many visitors any more because all of their kids are now grandparents and are busy with all of their own families. After we were done cleaning on our way home we felt that we needed to do something and visit them. We came up with a plan that as long as we don’t have kids, once a month we will hold FHE with them. We figured we’re both empty nesters at different ends of life and we could learn a lot more from them. When we showed up for the first time they were so thrilled! We talked for hours, we thought it would be a good opportunity to help them but little did we know how much this would actually impact us. They are a great example to us on how much two people can fall in love with each other. Over 63 years of being married. What an amazing example.
Great Uncle Charlie
The next service I would like to share is about my Great Uncle Charlie. He is 90 years old who still has a very independent spirit but he is losing his eyesight as well as his ability to stand for very long. My uncle Charlie and his wife live independently still in Provo and don’t have very many children around. What I thought would be nice is to go shovel their driveway whenever it snows. As I have done this it’s been a sobering experience because he has a strong personality. At first he did not really like the idea he didn’t want help, he thought he would do little by little over the next few days. Well as he tried he would get so far when the snow would come again and all cover all the work he had just done. When I showed up for the first he did not like how fast I got it done. The next time it snowed it was a heavier snow and as I showed up to shovel the snow I visited with them for a little bit before and is was so amazing to see how grateful he was for the help. He pulled me aside and said that “this is something else growing old and not being able to do simple things like shoveling but thanks for coming and helping and visiting us.”
This was an amazing gift and lifted my spirits higher than I think it lifted theirs.

I would like to thank Laura for being an inspiration to me. Thanks for serving everyone around you and spreading the Saviors love.

Dixie D

This year I got Dixie Dittbrenner for my service. Thinking about what I should do over the summer I thought about how Dixie was going to be going to a new school this coming school year and how hard it is to make new friends. So I decided that I would look out for someone at my school with the same situation. Hence my friend Cade.

Cade and I met the first day of school in our musical theater class and became instant friends. He was cast in our show as Donkey which was a pretty big accomplishment considering its his first year performing. Throughout rehearsals and shows he became one of my very best friends. I'm grateful for this opportunity we have had to serve and can't wait til next year

!

Merry Christmas Ben from Hermana Patterson

I was looking high and low for a service project that would be perfect for Ben. IT WAS WAY HARDER THEN I THOUGHT. Luckily, in the last two weeks my companion, Hermana Delgado and I were able to do a service project for a less active member who is remodeling her home. Construction totally = BEN! We have been over to help more then a couple of times and its been fun get dirty and build stuff. I like to pretend I am my cool uncle Ben who knows stuff, but the truth is, I don't. Love you Ben!  Merry Christmas!  Love, Lexi!

Dear Brianne,

It was so fun to do this service for you! It was really exciting to learn new things out of my comfort zone. I realized that you had a great love for music so...... I decided to learn how to play the violin! It was hard sometimes and I would often want to give up, but after a month of practicing I was finally able to play a few simple songs. The song I am playing in the video is "Silent Night" it may not sound  the best, but just know that the song came from my heart!

I also wrote you a short poem

 I love you Brianne!!!

At first we were just cousins, nothing else to say,
But through the years we’ve grown, creating a friendship along the way.
All though you are older and we live far apart, we still keep in contact and remember each other through our heart.
I love when we visit cause we have so much to do, this Christmas I’m sad cause I won’t be able
to see you.
Soon in the future you will be on your way, being a mother, a wife, and a teacher every day.
I hope you are happy with your family now, it’s tough living in Vegas, cause it’s such a big crowd.
The trials you face are terrible hard, don’t worry, lift your headup, the Lord’s never far.
Remember you’re a daughter of god, so you don’t need to paint an image of something you’re not.
I love you Brianne, and hope you know, that whatever happens, you are strong. I KNOW!

With much love,
Lydia
For my secret service I had the Spectacular Spencer!
I had an awesome time doing my project for you. You are an amazing cousin and i'm so blessed to have you in my life. Even though we don't talk all the time, I think about you and Hannah a lot and all the fun times we had in our diaper days:) Then I also think about all the things I miss out on now, being so far away from you guys... I just want you to know that I love you so much.

So, for my service to you, I hiked supposedly 15 miles, which actually turned out to be 17.2 miles with all of the youth in my stake. On November 4, we hiked from Konawaena High School, all the way to the Kona Temple. It took us 9 hours. Not too bad if I say so myself:) It was an amazing experience that I had with my friends and leaders.
We all got T-shirts and back packs that said "Always In Your Sights: Temple Trek 2013". That was the theme, to always look towards the temple and take advantage of the blessings we can get from it. The temple is an amazing place and I have felt its powers affect my life and the lives of others.
During all that walking, I circulated around. I talked to different people and met so many new friends. I got to talk to some old friends also. It helped me realize that we are the youth of Zion. We are here to build the Lords church. To perform miracles and bless others lives. And we do that when we are united through the gospel. Knitted through the spirit of Christ. We are the next generation to do the Lord work.

On the way from the school to the temple, we stopped several times to listen to devotionals and talks. The last stop before arriving to the temple was at a local beach. Everyone was so tired, sweaty, and hot. When I got there, I lied on the ground and our stake president started talking to us and telling us how proud he was. I was so tiered, that I fell asleep on the ground! Right in the middle of his talk! I was even towards the front, surrounded by my friends. Drooling. It was kinda embarrassing haha.
Finally, we got to the temple. The spirit was so strong with everyone as we sat at the entrance to that holy place. We ended our journey there.

That trek was a challenge for everyone, including me. Through the blisters, the sore feet, sore legs, dehydration, sickness, whooziness, hunger, pain, and all sorts of affliction, we managed to return to the temple together. It was very hard. Harder for some, but that's why we had each other, to help us along our long journey. To support our spirit brothers and sisters.

And that was my service to you my beloved cousin:)
I love you Spencer!

Merry Christmas/Mele Kalikimaka

for Alex. Love, Dad

In response to this annual challenge
I've had lots of time to think.
Alex was my person
How easy, no rush – whatever.
Time went on –
Subtle comments from my wife.
Summer came
Then not so subtle suggestions.
Times a movin' on this year.
Fall seemed to come
And then was gone.
I guess I better get serious-
Would you like some ideas she asked (again)
Sure – whatever –
I've still got lots of time.
OK – but how about this idea
She suggested I paint the Olsen's front door.
(It was brand new – several years ago – but never painted)
And afterall, front doors are my specialty.
Yea, that's good – whatever.
Alex is easy.....
I really just need to invite him over
And play a game with him.
In actuality – time was movin' on
I needed to take it seriously
So we presented the plan to Colleen and Gale -
There concern was it was just too cold
Ahh, whatever
I can use a hair dryer – like I did at the Whipples
But this is there home – so I wanted to respect their wishes.
Maybe in the Spring.
So, long about then –
Dixie suggested the class on learning about Autism.
I went to the class with Mom, there was a ton of information.
Then the greatest opportunity popped up
Well, maybe
If they actually get the house
I will be kept very busy
Demolishing, finish carpentering,
Patching, sanding, & painting.
It will look like new-

And I'm happy to help by sharing my talents with you.

Just One of Our Many Miracles...for Cindy from Jimae

Long about seven years ago
We still had a son at home
He had served his family and his God
And now pursued his education.

His evenings and weekends were spent at home
Or at his work or school.
Rarely a word or action
Indicated he would rather be elsewhere.

Then his job was changed
To the Movies 9, quite aways away.
Clear out in somewhere called Sandy
And soon we saw a change.

He seemed anxious to get to work
Just a little bit early or coming home somewhat late.
Slight changes in his attitudes
And a lightness in his step.

One night he told his mother
He had an important event on Thursday-
What was it ? That's right -
A real life date.

The kind that required planning
A setting apart of time
A question to be asked
But need to happen fast.

You see, our forthcoming miracle
Was leaving for a 6 month stint
Out somewhere in the South called Louisville
To work and learn and grow.

“She” was leaving soon and would be going-
Gone for who knows how long-
To work and learn and grow
And our son wanted to make an impression.

That she might consider continuing
Their friendship that was just beginning-
Well, she left, was gone and we notoiced
He was around at home again.

However, he was often on the phone at nights
And kinda mopey there times after.
It was almost Easter and he came to me
And said “I'd like to send a package.”

Well, I asked him, what would you like to send?
I don't know – just something kinda cute.
Not jewelry or flowers, that's too much
So please help me figure it out.

At the grocery store, I saw the perfect thing!
The “cutest” thing of all -
It would take some manouvering and boxing
and some extensive packaging.

But overall it didn't really weigh much -
So back to the store I went with my son in tow
“Are you sure Mom - A girl would really like this?”
“Trust me son – it's perfect.”

And so it was that it arrived
In Louisville two days later.
Just in time for Easter
A giant yellow duck!

Bigger than a breadbox –
Actually bigger than a living room chair.
And as far as I know the story goes
That the first response was from her broher.

To his parents he made a call-
You won't believe what came in the mail
It's something just bizarre -
A giant yellow duck!

I think this guy might like her-
Our little sister, Cindy.
Why else would a guy fuss like that
It just really isn't natural.

Well it certainly encuraged the relationship,
And soon she was coming home.
They got to know each other better,
They dated and played and soon became our daughter.

Well, time passed and they finished their educations
And then presented us with the most beautiful baby boy.
He was perfect...tiny toes and nose
Big eyes and lots of dark hair.

But as our James grew older
We recognized delays and were eventually told
That he would be slow to walk and talk
But oh - how he could smile!

And laugh right out loud with the best of us-
So, with smiles and hugs for both grandmas-
Singing Songs and blowing kisses
He was our precious darling boy.

This year I was honored to think about
And serve our miracle, Cindy.
I wanted to show her my love
And appreciaiton for the beautiful person she is.

If I could just do a couple of things...
To make her job somewhat easier.
I wanted to give her a few minutes of peace
Or a little time on own her own.

And so I watched for ways -
To have Grandma time with James
A few times to the park and the swimming pool
And also an amusement park.

Best of all was my privelage
To pick him up after school at his bus
And then take him home to his family
Just me and him in my white car.

Each time I had a little gift for him
(And in this case it wasn't candy)
Instead something he loves with little wheels
Something small to hold in his hands.

I wanted to be his “Santa”
And found him the very perfect gift.
A big yellow school bus that he could sit in and pretend to drive
That also had a mini roadway and lots of cars.

Other acts of service this year,
Such as serving the families at the shelter-
But my true opportunity came in November,
When I learned of a class – especially for those
Who love a child with Autism.

And so I enrolled and attended,
With Dad along the first time.
I loved the learning experience, the stories and examples
And will continue another five times.

And so this year has ended.
A new year will be coming along-
And I will continue thinking about
And daily praying for you and your sweet family-
Just One Of Our Many Miracles.

Ben's Post for Brian

For Brian,

Brian and I share several important aspects of our lives.  One of which are our initials (BK Rules haha!) Another is a love of my sister Liz who has always done such a great job of keeping our families together and moving in the right direction.  Cycling is another interest we both have pursued with vigor.  Then there is the inexplicable blessing and fact that we both brought five girls and one son into this world.  We must both share the same heavenly gifts of patience and the uncanny ability to love Heavenly Fathers daughters.  And of course the gift to listen to these women explain the never ending details of their lives in so many words without going completely bonkers!  Heavenly Fathers must have gifted us with a gift to listen.

As Aubrey became more and more sick this year, Katherine or I would need to go to the children's hospital in Honolulu and stay with her for an unknown amount of time while the testing and treatments were being administered.  Because of our little baby Lauren, it was decided that I would be the one to go.  Giving up work and all other aspects of life to be with this precious little girl was a no-brainer for me.  She needed her daddy by her for all the scary tests and procedures.  It was heart breaking to see her suffer but these were necessary steps to get her back to being a happy two year old.  Brian and I share this love for our daughters!
We both love and spoil our only sons, and this post shouldn't take anything away from them.  These two boys know how special they are.  But again, for some reason Heavenly Father trusts Brian and I to take care of these girls in these last days.  Days which are full of trouble and challenge.  I can think of nothing more noble than raising virtuous daughters.

Being in the hospital room for a week was a challenge for both Aubrey and I.  Fortunately the children's wing of the hospital had several  toy rooms to keep her entertained during her good hours.  In honor of Brian, I decided to donate some computer type toys to the hospital so other sick kids can develop their computer hacking skills!

Brian, you are an awesome example of a father and husband!  Keep up the good work and the rest of us will try and keep up!  Merry Christmas!!!

Erik's Service

I did a service for our Bishop.  I created a Sunday survival kit that includes beef jerky, granola bars, breakfast bars, and other fun treats.  This is for him to keep in his office for Sunday's he doesn't get lunch.  The reason I did a service for my Bishop is because I got Kevan as my person to do service for.  Since Kevan was a Bishop, I thought that I could extend the service to my Bishop.  Merry Christmas!

-Erik P.
Lauren
Being that it has been kind of a crazy year being pregnant- having a baby-dealing with a 2 year old.  I ended up doing a few different services half way.  Not the way I would have wanted, but together they make up a whole. :)

When I received your name I thought about how much I love that you have learned to play the piano. Something we have in common.  I have always tried to teach my children music and to play the piano, but each attempt usually fizzles out before much progress has been made.  I always felt guilty about not being able to teach the one talent I have to my children...(Drives Ben nuts too) So this was the year to buckle down........well it didn't happen between crying babies, homework, and other after school activities.  Then Lydia decided she wanted to learn the violin, so I thought now I have my chance.  Then I realized I didn't know the first thing about actually teaching someone the violin...lol.  So I bought a video and some books  other helps on Amazon, and told her to watch the video and I would implement and help throughout.  So far so good.  I plan to keep working on this service. (See Lydia's post)

So after not really excelling at teaching my kids music I thought about you a lot.  Especially after I was blessed to get two wedding invitations in the mail.  I kept one on my fridge and had one on my desk to keep you constantly in my thoughts.  I thought how wonderful it was that you got to enter the temple and complete your endowment and be sealed forever.  I love the temple.  Kona temple is a very small temple and I know almost everyone who works there.  They give me lots of hugs.  I was determined to attend every week since I got your name in honor of your newly wedded temple covenants.  I made it most weeks definitely not perfect.  I often thought of the beginning of my own marriage, I wished that I had attended the temple back then more often.  The temple is my solace,  the only place I can really leave the world behind, I don't feel stress, and I regain my eternal perspective. I hope you will take this new opportunity and attend as often as you can.  In the beginning I always thought I had to attend with my husband....it's a myth.  Go by yourself if he can't make it.  Go, Go, Go......Families are Forever.

So the last thing is.....Well I basically named my baby after you.  It doesn't get better than that!  Lauren I love you.  Merry Christmas.

Katherine

Lauren's Service for Katherine!

As I was contemplating what to do as a service I was very impressed with how much Katherine supported one of her young single adults going on a mission.  It was such an amazing example; first of all by loving the people she serves in her calling.  It was also great to see that she supported this sister missionary as much as she could even so much that the sister missionary lived with them for a while before leaving on the mission and Katherine then traveled to the mainland, went through the temple with her, and dropped her off at the MTC.  I decided that my service would be based off of this experience Katherine had in supporting her sister missionary.  I have learned to love those I serve in my ward although my only calling currently is visiting teacher.  I have also been writing several sister missionaries on a weekly basis (mostly weekly, sometimes it’s every other week).  I have also been contributing to the general and ward missionary funds.  Thank you Katherine for being such a great example to me and for being the inspiration for the service I was able to give!

Love,

Lauren

To Nicky

When I think about Nicky it comes to my mind a mothers love. She is always caring. All year I was thinking what should I do for her. I know she likes to sing and read books.  A few weeks ago I had the  opportunity to serve. My renter Nicole  was not feeling good. I decide to clean her apartment and  my  mom  cook for her. She was very grateful and I ended up buying a new table for her. Her old one was about to  break in  pieces. It was nice to do it for her and at the same time  I felt the spirit. Since I got here I have always said that Nicole Paterson brings comfort to me when I feel sad. Besides my mom, my mom Jimae, Nicole will be my number 3. So my service this year was to help a friend and give her the comfort that a mom could give. Thanks Nicole for being a good sister to me and not only that but every time we have the time to read our scriptures with my kids I always think of you and your family and the beautiful way you teach them to read. Love you.

Merry Christmas Cris!

When we first brought up the idea of doing a service blog like the Gates' family, I explained to my family with an example.  "If you got, Cristina, for example, you could do a service for a widow that you know, or maybe volunteer to help people who are learning English as a second language."  Imagine my surprise when the name I drew was actually Cris!  I lucked out because I already had an awesome idea or two!  I quickly realized I didn't know many widows to serve.  So I started looking for an ESL program. I remembered Cristina coming to my house on that snowy New Year's Eve for the first time.  She knew very little English and looked absolutely overwhelmed!  I'm so proud of how hard she has worked and how fluent she is!  I think she may know more English than Spanish now!
I could have gone to the local Elementary school, but I wanted to work with adults learning English since that was Cris' situation.  I finally tracked down a program in Provo.  I found out when their next session began and for 12 weeks I drove to Provo to help out in the classroom.  I worked in the level two classroom because I didn't feel I knew enough Spanish to fully communicate with someone who knows zero English.  Every week we'd have between 5-20 adults come for a 2 hour lesson.  They came three days a week, but I only went once.  I loved working with these people!!  They were so friendly and wanted so badly to learn.  Most of them were Mexican or from another Spanish speaking country.  There were two from Brazil, one from China and one from Korea.

The teacher did most of the talking, but I sat by the slower students and helped them.  One student in particular, Teresita, became a good friend.  She is from Argentina and trying to learn English but has a learning disability on top of trying to learn a new languate.  (She is in the red on the far right of picture below)

I looked forward to this service every week.  I truly came to love them.  About two weeks into this service I decided to get my master's degree from WGU.  I had signed up to do a quicker program about Curriculum development.  I just didn't like it!  I felt so grumpy about doing it.  One night I was up with my usual insomnia, and it occurred to me that WGU has a Masters for English language. Because of my experience with my service for Cris, I knew I would enjoy it.   I had to get special permission to enter it because my teaching license is expired.  The minute I switched programs I felt a load lifted.  I knew that was the program I was supposed to do.  Thanks Cris for helping me find something I love to learn about!  I love you!  Merry Christmas!

A Poem for Darcy

Strongest
At times God will hand you a rough, tough life.
Whether it be a family member gone,
or a new school with friends who give you strife,
I know that you're strong enough to move on.
You're one of the strongest people I know,
and because of you I have learned so much.
I've learned that to God I'm not some "Jane Doe",
and that through His love, He can be my crutch.
Because of your strength, I have learned this:
That as long as you keep your head held high,
this life on earth will be quite a bliss.
Just keep God near you, until you die,
and then He'll welcome you with such great pride.
All this I know because of the strength you confide.

Your strength is incredible Darce. You've had a tough year, as I've noticed, but your example of strength is a blessing. I love you so much, and Merry Christmas!

To Hannah, love Darcy

Hannah darling you have been blessed with an amazing gift which inspired me to share what I can do during the month of  December I took every opportunity to share my musical ability. I am truly sorry I have no pictures.

So in seminary I would play the piano, which was no biggie but my favorite part was I got a group together to go Christmas Caroling. These students were all amazing singers and they kind of took charge to make sure everyone was singing the right part. We prepared 3 songs before at someone's house and then went out and sang to all widows in our ward and single men. We also sang to the families in my ward with special needs kids.

There was one man who's house we went to and I was kinda scared when he opened the door but he was super nice. (turns out he is in the Mormon Tabernacle Choir) He opened the door came out and sat on a rocking chair on his porch and smiled and listened. When we finished he stood up clapped and said we were better than the Mormon Tabernacle Choir. We all laughed said Merry Christmas and left.

I love your talent and I love you Merry Christmas Hannah!

Merry Christmas Casey

My Christmas service was for one of the newest additions to our family,  Casey. I don't know kacie all that well, but from what I do know of him I've been able to tell that he is a soft hearted individual who cares for those closest to him. I know that he recently came home from his mission, and I know that at least for me one of the most important things to bring home from a mission was the relationship I had with companions.so the service that I was able to render, was for one of my closest mission companions. His name is Elder Pratt Despain.

Pratt & I have been close since the mission. We have hung out often and I have made several new friends through him as well. He is now married and has one little girl. Unfortunately, Pratt and his family have fallen on some hard times this year. Pratt had his car breakdown, and needed help in not only getting around but also in looking for a new car.

The service that I did, was on a few different occasions providing transportation that Pratt and his family needed. for a few days in a row, I got up early to take pratt to his work. This provided him the opportunity to get to work without needing to rent a car. The other, was that when he and his wife were ready to buy a car, I went and picked them up after work, as well as their baby girl Lorna, and took them to a few car places that they had found potential cars for them to buy. While they were looking at cars and test driving them I would keep an eye on their little girl. It took the better part of the evening, but was glad to be able to be service too one of my dearest friends.

So to KC, I say Merry Christmas and I hope you can appreciate how important it is to keep up relationships after the mission.

Merry Christmas Bruce!

The service I did this year was for Bruce! As I contemplated what I'd like to do in the name of our dear Dad, I wanted to do something that reminded me of him that I could do for him. I thought of his talents and hobbies. I decided to take what he can do, which happens to be a something that many of us in our family appreciates        - painting - and create a service with this skill.

My ward participated in the Sub for Santa project to 2 needy families within my ward boundaries. They asked for donations in forms of gifts or money to help give these 2 families something for Christmas. I decided rather than just donating money to this cause, that I would paint a toy for one of the younger boys in one of the families. I bought a pre-cut wooden train, painted it, then decorated it with stickers. I gave it to the family in the ward in charge of the Sub for Santa project that will wrap and deliver the train for Christmas.

It was fun project to do and I am glad I could contribute to someone's Christmas. Merry Christmas Bruce!!

for Alyssa: Therminator and Healyssa

So I recently finished my Christmas service project for Alyssa, and I made a little video thing about a boy and girl who has powers when they interact with bullies... I wanted to make something about Alyssa being a wizard in the Harry Potter world, but I didn't get any Harry Potter ideas, so I made a story (using a programming language called Scratch) about these two with incredible super powers...

The Gift That Keeps On Giving....Merry Christmas Liz!!

Merry Christmas Liz!  When I think about you, and what you love, lots of good things come to mind.  The main thing I thought of was your love for music.  I remember growing up listening to all the music you loved.  I still have a few church tapes and CD’s you made for me with awesome Michael McLean or Mariah Carey songs on them.  I have always loved church music and I give you the credit for introducing me to many of my favorites.  I admire your beautiful singing voice and musical talent.

When David died, I needed church music to fill my days, to keep my spirit at peace.  It made such a huge difference in my grieving.  “I Feel My Savior’s Love” was the song that was played on repeat the weeks following David’s death.  The words and tune bring me so much peace.

The first thing I did to serve in your name was join the stake choir.  I am not a confident singer, so this was kind of scary for me to do.  It was so great!  First of all, I didn’t have to sit with the kids for the entire 2 hours of Stake Conference, so I really enjoyed the meeting.  (Thanks to Kevan for handling all the fun.)  Also I LOVED the songs we sang as a choir.  Alyssa was able to sing with the choir as well, so we enjoyed going to the practices together.

My favorite song was a beautiful arrangement of “Where Can I Turn for Peace” and “Be Still My Soul”.  It would bring tears to my eyes almost every time we rehearsed it because I love the messages in these two songs.

Where can I turn for peace?
Where is my solace?
When other sources cease to make me whole?
When with a wounded heart, anger or malice,
I draw myself apart, searching my soul?

Be still my soul:
The Lord is on thy side;
With patience bear they cross of grief or pain,
Leave to they God to order and provide;
In every change He faithful will remain.
Be still my soul; thy best, thy Heavenly Friend-
Thru thorny ways leads to joyful end.
Be still, my soul:
The hour is hastening on, when we shall be forever with the Lord,
When disappointment, grief and fear are gone, sorrow forgot
Loves purest joys restored.

He answers privately, reaches my reaching.
In my Gethsemane—Savior and friend.
Gentle, the peace He finds for my beseeching
Constant He is and kind-
Love without end.

Be still my soul, thy best, thy Heavenly Friend
Constant He is and kind—Love without end.
Constant He is and kind—Love without end.

I have a testimony of these words, I know they are true!  I know that when we make the time to “Be Still” we can feel of His constant kindness and love without end.  I searched and searched for a recording of this arrangement and could not find one anywhere.  I asked Kevan to audio record us in the chapel to play for this little blog post.

Almost two weeks after our Stake Conference, I got the heartbreaking phone call from Lani, telling me about Ryan’s car accident.   My heart started pounding as I tried to absorb the news and what this would mean for the Conley and Gates families.  I started playing this song in my head on repeat.  “Where can I turn for peace…Be still my soul” .

Imagine my surprise when, on that awful Monday morning, Liz posts on our blog a recording of this arrangement!  It was a tender mercy for me for sure.  I quickly bought the song on iTunes and recorded it onto several CDs to give away while in California.  That post can be found and you can listen to the song here:  here.

I am so grateful that we were able to be in California together the week of Ryan’s death.  I know our relationship will forever be stronger because of the experiences we had together and the lessons we learned.  You are such a great example to me.

Once we got home, I kept thinking I wanted to do just a little bit more for you as my service.  One day I heard about Lindsey Stirling’s fundraising project to earn money for the Atlanta Music Project.

The Atlanta Music Project provides intense music education for underserved youth right in their neighborhood.  Our Mission Statement is “To inspire social change by providing Atlanta’s underserved youth the opportunity to learn and perform music in orchestras and choirs."
T he Atlanta Music Project provides for each of its students: an instrument, classes, world-class Teaching Artists and numerous performance opportunities.  AMP classes include orchestra, choir, musicianship, African drum and dance and group lessons in the following orchestral instruments: violin, viola, cello, bass, flute, clarinet, trumpet and trombone. As AMP expands, we will offer oboe, bassoon, french horn, tuba and orchestral percussion.

I felt good about donating to a worthy cause, and made a donation in your name.  You can read more about the Atlanta Music Project on their website here:

love you so much Liz!  Merry Christmas!

p.s.  I wrote this little blog post back in October, and since then I've gotten a new ward calling....one that is making me stretch and grow more than any other I've ever had.  It's Primary Chorister.  ACKK!!  I am not confident in the music world at all.  I guess Heavenly Father thought it was time for me to be stretched beyond where I am comfortable.  All I can think is that someone in the new bishopric must have seen me in Stake Choir and thought I must be musical.  So, now my service for you will continue on as I try my best to fulfill my calling...and I have you to thank for that.  ;)

To: Jimae From: Wes

Dear Jimae, since I got your name and read how this service project would work, I thought to myself "I'm going to do this well, I'm not going to be a jerk". Every week that passed by, I would end the week with a sigh, commmitted to not let this service fly by. One week in ward council the relief society asked if anyone could help install some kitchen plumbing for a family who's dad was away in therapy for a serious condition that he will most certainly die from in less than 2 years. I sat in silence waiting for someone to volunteer, but the request seemed to fall on deaf ears, so I raised my hand and said I, I would give my sweat and tears. I put in my best effort for nearly 2 hours, hardly a drop of sweat and no tears were drawn, so the though never crossed my mind that I would count this for my service project. Nonetheless, I was more than happy to help. As the weeks began to slip by, I kept trying to find a great creative idea of service that would be worthy of Jimae. Each Thursday night, before Friday morning garbage pick up, I would drag our big black garbage can to the curb, and out of sense of neighborly love, and maybe an excuse to stay outside for a little bit longer, I would take another short trip to the Newman's driveway and take theirs too. It only took an extra minute, no way could I count this small effort for a noteworthy cause. Nearing the end of my alloted time frame, my wife, Cristina, had planned her big service by name. For our renter below, she would clean her appartment and garnish it with a new table worthy of show. Of course for my wife I would do as I was told, so I carried the 100 pound boxed table from the garage to the basement, and assembled it with the ease of a paper fold. A few new light bulbs, some wet wadded hair clogging the shower drain removed, and a few screws to straighten a door. Now that my wife has fulfilled her service project, how can I be outdone? I'm too competitive to be the only one to not complete a challenge! No more walking, I now must run! As the final weeks turn into days, I have no time for a big service project. The demand for my time and attention at work increases, and the snow on the road makes my commute even longer. One snow fall here, and another one there, during my snow removal duty, I decide to plow the sidewalk for my neighbor... since I'm already in that direction, I might aswell keep going and plow the next neighbors sidewalk too, afterall, this gas powered machine is doing all the work. Before I know it, I have plowed the side walk for all 10 houses down my street. 3 times I do this on different days, but it hardly took much extra effort since all I do is sit and push a gas pedal... no, this can't count as my service project. As Christmas day has finally come, and I have no grand service project story to share, I'll let you be the judge... did I share Our Saviors Love? Wes

Maisie

The cousin I got to serve this year was the incredible Maisie! When I think of Maisie, I think of how kind, hardworking, and passionate she is.  I know she is a great artist, and is a runner. Since I am not an artist in any way, I decided I was going to do something that had to do with running. I searched for some 5k runs that used the money from participants to donate to charity. I came up with several options, but in the end I chose Cooper’s Run. Cooper’s Run was started by Cooper’s family to remember Cooper and to thank all of the people that helped them during Cooper’s death. They use the money they receive from the run to help families that don’t have the money to send their kids to preschool. Many families benefit from the money. What’s even cooler about Cooper’s run, is that Cooper is our extended cousin, so by running in the race, I got to show support to Cooper’s family.

I ran the race on a Saturday and my dad was super awesome and ran the race with me. We both got cool t-shirts, and I wrote Maisie’s name on the back of my shirt because I was running the race for her.  The race went pretty well, but about 5 minutes into it, I got a painful side ache. It was hard, but I finished the race with my dad. It was a really neat experience, and I’m glad I got to do it to support Cooper’s family and to help families in need of money so that they can send their kids to school.

I love you Maisie! Have an amazing Christmas! Thanks for being such an awesome example to me! Love, Alyssa
